Preparation for STK and Emission Control – Complete Guide
Preparation for the STK is an important step that can determine whether your vehicle passes the technical and emission inspection without complications. The technical inspection checks the vehicle’s technical condition, safety, and roadworthiness, while the emission inspection monitors the amount of harmful emissions produced by the vehicle. If you prepare for the STK in advance, you will avoid unnecessary repairs, re-inspections, and wasted time.
At STK City Bratislava, you can handle the STK and emission inspection quickly and without unnecessary waiting. You can find us at Rožňavská 18541/2, 821 04 Bratislava (entrance from Trnavská cesta, NAD 820 complex). You can easily book an appointment online at stkcity.sk, and in most cases we can provide a slot within 24 hours. For regular customers, we also offer a free STK reminder service.
When Do You Need to Get an STK?
Passenger Cars (M1) and Light Commercial Vehicles up to 3.5 t (N1)
The first technical inspection is carried out 4 years after the vehicle’s first registration, then every 2 years.
Heavy Goods Vehicles over 3.5 t and Buses
Heavy goods vehicles over 3.5 t and buses are subject to STK every year due to higher load and traffic safety requirements.
Motorcycles, Tricycles and Quadricycles (L3e–L7e):
From July 2024, they are subject to technical inspection every 4 years from the vehicle’s first registration.
Braked Trailer Vehicles from 751 to 3500 kg (O2):
Technical inspection is carried out every 4 years for the safety of trailer braking and stability.
Unbraked Trailers up to 750 kg (O1):
These trailers are not subject to technical inspection under current legislation.
Documents — Without Them, You Won't Be Admitted to the STK
Before visiting STK Bratislava, prepare all the necessary documents. Without them, it is not possible to carry out the technical or emission inspection of the vehicle.
You will need:
- Vehicle registration certificate (small technical certificate)
- Protocol from the previous STK or EK, if you have it
- Identity document
- For vehicles with LPG or CNG, also the documentation for the conversion
We recommend checking the validity of all documents before booking an appointment.
What to Check Before the STK

Check all lights including indicators and fog lights.

Tyres must have the correct tread depth and must not be damaged.

Check the windscreen wipers and top up the washer fluid.

The mandatory vehicle equipment must be complete and valid.

Cracks in the windscreen in the driver’s field of view may be a problem.

The vehicle must not have a visible oil or other fluid leak.

No engine, ABS or airbag warning lights must be illuminated on the dashboard.

Brakes and the handbrake must be fully functional and reliable.
Most Common Reasons for Failing the STK
Many vehicles fail the technical inspection due to minor issues that can easily be fixed. The most common reasons for failing include:
- Non-functioning or incorrectly set lights
- Worn tyres
- Excessive emissions
- Damaged chassis or brakes
- Cracked windscreen
- Engine or safety system warning lights illuminated
- Oil or other fluid leak
Regular servicing and a basic vehicle check before the STK can save you both time and money.
